If there are no holidays in between, your waiver(DL389) and completion card are usually processed, issued and put in the mail a few days after your class ends. Expiration of the waiver for the DMV(the DL389) occurs one year from your class date. We are not able to replace the DL389.

We are not allowed to send these documents electronically, so they will be sent via snail mail. We cannot track, guarantee or know when they will arrive, we can only guarantee they will be put in the mail within 10 working days after you pass your class, though it is usually much earlier. Therefore, we do not recommend scheduling your DMV visit before you have your certificate in hand.

The DL389 is what you will turn in to the DMV. If you decide to have it mailed and then decide it is taking too long to get to you, we cannot issue another one for you to pick up. You will have to wait until it is delivered.

Your completion card will accompany your waiver and can provide discounts at many motorcycle retailers and insurance companies, so be sure to shop around. It does not expire and we are able to replace it if you lose it.

WHAT TO DO NEXT
The DL389 may waive the M1 riding test at the DMV, but you must also pass the DMV’s written knowledge test and then turn in the DL389 in person at the DMV to be issued an M1 endorsement. In order to go to the DMV only once, we recommend you wait until you have your DL389. You will be required to show the DMV the same ID you showed us at all in person sessions you attended.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE MORE PRACTICE BEFORE GOING ON THE ROAD OR GETTING YOUR OWN BIKE
If you would like more practice but you are not ready to sign up for the Intermediate Riding Clinic on your own bike, the way to get the most guided practice in a parking lot for the least amount of money is to come back as a standby student. Coming back as a standby is the cheapest way to get the most number of riding hours.  It allows you to repeat the riding sessions of the beginning class as many times as you would like over a 6 month period at any of our locations in SF, Alameda or Vallejo. If you were already a standby student you are welcome to use what is left of the time you still have in your standby email for this purpose.

If you prefer a confirmed seat, you might want to consider our Extra Ride Time or confirmed Day 1 or Day 2 riding sessions.

Please wait to sign up for the Intermediate Riding Clinic until you have enough practice to be comfortable riding on the street, as you will not be allowed into the class if the instructor feels you are unsafe and/or you cannot pass the entry test.

Congratulations again ride safe! : )

IF YOU ARE UNDER 18
There is a 6 month waiting period after receiving your permit, and only the original certificate will be accepted when it is time to receive your license. You are required to show your DL389 to the DMV, but since sometimes the DMV workers insist on keeping it, make a convincing color copy of your DL389 so it will not matter if they try to keep it.  Don’t point out or make it obvious that you are showing a copy of your waiver when you are getting your permit and let them keep them keep it so you have your original to give them when it is required at the end of your 6 month permit period.  Do NOT argue with the DMV or surrender the original until after your mandatory permit period is over.  Other than letting you come back as a standby student so you can earn a new certificate, we cannot help you if you give the original to the DMV before you are eligible to get your license.
