Your waiver(DL389) and completion card are usually processed, issued and put in the mail a few days after your class ends. Expiration of the waiver for the DMV(the DL389) occurs one year from your class date. We are not able to replace the DL389.

We are not allowed to send these documents electronically, so they will be sent through the mail. We cannot track, guarantee or know when they will arrive, we can only guarantee they will be put in the mail within 10 working days after you pass your class, though it is usually much earlier. Therefore, we do not recommend scheduling your DMV visit before you have your certificate in hand.

The DL389 is what you will turn in to the DMV. If you decide to have it mailed and then decide it is taking too long to get to you, we cannot issue another one for you to pick up. You will just have to wait until it is delivered.

The MTC completion card will accompany your waiver, and can provide you with discounts at some motorcycle retailers and insurance companies. It does not expire and we are able to replace it if you lose it.

WHAT TO DO NEXT
The DL389 may waive the M1 riding test at the DMV, but you must also pass the DMV’s written knowledge test and then turn in the DL389 in person at the DMV to be issued an M1 endorsement. In order to go to the DMV only once, we recommend you wait until you have your DL389. You will be required to show the DMV the same ID you showed us at your riding sessions.

IF YOU ARE UNDER 18
There is a 6 month waiting period after receiving your permit, so please call our office immediately if you are asked to give your DL389 to the DMV, since only the original certificate will be accepted when it is time to receive your license. We may not be able to help you if you give the original to the DMV before you are eligible to get your license. We strongly suggest that you make a copy of your DL389 and take both the original and the copy to the DMV, but only show the original to them if they notice/request it, and do NOT let them take your original, since we will not be able to help you if they do. Instead, do not surrender the original and immediately call us at 888.744.2268.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE MORE PRACTICE BEFORE GOING ON THE ROAD OR GETTING YOUR OWN BIKE
If you would like more practice but you are not ready to sign up for the Intermediate Riding Clinic on your own bike, the way to get the most guided practice in a parking lot for the least amount of money is to come back as a standby student. Coming back as a standby is the cheapest way to get the most number of riding hours.  It allows you to repeat the riding sessions of the beginning class as many times as you would like over a 6 month period at any of our locations in SF, Alameda or Vallejo. If you were already a standby student you are welcome to use what is left of the time you still have in your standby email for this purpose.

If you prefer a confirmed seat, you might want to consider our Extra Ride Time or confirmed Day 1 or Day 2 riding sessions.

Please wait to sign up for the Intermediate Riding Clinic until you have enough practice to be comfortable riding on the street, as you will not be allowed into the class if the instructor feels you are unsafe and/or you cannot pass the entry test.

Congratulations again and ride safe! : )
