Congratulations, you have passed the beginning motorcycle class!
Congratulations, you have passed the beginning motorcycle class!
Your waiver(DL389) and completion card are usually processed, issued and put in the mail a few days after your class ends. Expiration of the waiver for the DMV(the DL389) occurs one year from your class date. We are not able to replace the DL389.
We are not allowed to send these documents electronically, so they will be sent through the mail. We cannot track, guarantee or know when they will arrive, we can only guarantee they will be put in the mail within 10 working days after you pass your class, though it is usually much earlier. Therefore, we do not recommend scheduling your DMV visit before you have your certificate in hand.
The DL389 is what you will turn in to the DMV. If you decide to have it mailed and then decide it is taking too long to get to you, we cannot issue another one for you to pick up. You will just have to wait until it is delivered.
The MTC completion card will accompany your waiver, and can provide you with discounts at some motorcycle retailers and insurance companies. It does not expire and we are able to replace it if you lose it.
If you are in a hurry and so would prefer to pick it up at our office on Treasure Island, please click here for pick up details.
WHAT TO DO NEXT
The DL389 may waive the M1 riding test at the DMV, but you must also pass the DMV’s written knowledge test and then turn in the DL389 in person at the DMV to be issued an M1 endorsement. In order to go to the DMV only once, we recommend you wait until you have your DL389. You will be required to show the DMV the same ID you showed us at your riding sessions.
IF YOU ARE UNDER 21
There is a 6 month waiting period after receiving your permit. Since only the original certificate will be accepted when it is time to receive your license DO NOT give the DMV your certificate!!
We will not be able to help you if you give your original to the DMV before you are eligible to get your license. To avoid this issue, make a very good looking copy of your DL389 to show to the DMV so you can just let them have it, if necessary.
The only way we can help you if you give the DMV your original copy before you have met your licensing requirements is to have you earn a new certificate as a standby student, so do not give them your original copy.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE MORE PRACTICE BEFORE GOING ON THE ROAD OR GETTING YOUR OWN BIKE
If you would like more practice but you are not ready to sign up for the Intermediate Riding Clinic on your own bike, the way to get the most guided practice in a parking lot for the least amount of money is to come back as a standby student.
This email waives the standby fee for two months after you have passed the skill test. Please be prepared to show the instructor a screen shot or printout of this email as proof of your eligibility to be let in. Other than taking the classes in order, all of same requirements still apply to any class attended as a standby student, so you will only need to show a printout or a screen shot of this letter, but you will not have to show proof of having taken the classroom sessions to be allowed into class.
If you were already a standby student you are welcome to use what is left of the time you still have in your standby email for this purpose.
If do not feel you are ready for the street and prefer a confirmed seat, you might want to consider Extra Ride Time I, which consists of exercises similar to the first riding session, is overseen by CMSP instructors and allows you to ride our bikes. Extra Ride Time II is based upon the second riding day exercises and allows you to ride our bike or your own bike.
Please wait to sign up for the Intermediate Riding Clinic until you have enough practice to be comfortable riding on the street, as you will not be allowed into the class if the instructor feels you are unsafe and/or you cannot pass the entry test.
